What are Dapps?
Dapps are computer applications run on such distributed computing systems that use distributed ledger technologies(DLT) and are fueled using tokens which are generated using a protocol/algorithm. These decentralized applications (Dapps) or smart contracts are open-source software that leverages on and executed by a blockchain system. They have no central governing body or ownership.
What are the common features of blockchain dApps:
- Open Source – Changes to be done are decided by the consensus/ majority of its users.
- Decentralized – All operational records of the application must be stored on a public and decentralized blockchain to avoid the pitfalls of centralization.
- Incentivized – Validators of the blockchain are rewarded with cryptographic tokens.
- Protocol – The application community agrees on a cryptographic algorithm to show proof of value – like Proof of Work (PoW).
There are thousands of dApps built on dApps platforms (see the above picture). Developers use these platforms to code smart contracts. There can be dApps for managing money, governance & voting, storage, gambling, games, media, marketplaces, exchanges, insurance, energy, education, or identity.
Let’s look at the following list showing apps built on the blockchain. Keep in mind that there is a difference between the blockchain platform and the Apps built on this platform.

Few More Popular dApps
There are many more projects listed on Github where developers’ activity is high in the blockchain space including pushes, pull requests, commits and issues To name a few more – Cryptokitties, IDEX, Mobile Ethereum OS – Status, Decentralized cloud storage network – Storj, virtual reality platform – High Fidelity, Tendermint-based blockchain interoperability platform – Cosmos, Ethereum mainstay – Aragon, Origin Protocol, Ethereum-based prediction platform Gnosis, Trust Wallet, ARK, Santiment, Metamask, POA Network’s BlockScout, Neufund, RocketGame, CryptantCrab, Ethlance, Radex, Prism, ForkDelta, Bancor, ALLBET, and so on.
Before ending this article, I must say Dapps and Blockchain adoption by the companies is still in its infancy and research mode but this disruptive technology is the future. Users are eagerly waiting for a better, secure, resilient, trustless ecosystem and Blockchain can make that happen!
